The fruit for our wines is sourced from our own
"Heysen Estate" vineyard situated on
undulating hills in the heart of the Barossa Valley.
Shiraz vines were first planted in 1994, with subsequent plantings of
Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1997, and Riesling, Mouvédre and Grenache in 2001.
Present plantings comprise five hectares of Shiraz, two
hectares of Semillon, two hectares of Merlot, one hectare of Cabernet
Sauvignon, one and a half hectares of Riesling and one and a quarter hectares
each of Mouvédre and Grenache.
The vines are trellised on a single wire, with foliage wires used to lift the
canopy and expose the grapes to the sun.
Water is monitored by a "neutron probe" which measures the moisture
content of the soil at various depths throughout the vineyard. The
readings enable water to be applied only as required via a computerised drip irrigation system.
A
section of the Shiraz is “dry grown” to ensure maximum concentration of flavours
and this is used only for our premium wine . . . The Reserve.
Barossa Valley grape growers have come together to lay a pipeline bringing
water to the valley, thus ensuring quality water and a ready supply for the
dry years.
All vines are hand pruned to control the quantity of fruit and to maximise the quality of the harvest, which in turn
produces quality wine.
